Summary

She answered the Emperor's call。

She arrived with her arts, her wits, and her only friend。

In victory, her world has turned to ash。

After rocking the cosmos with her deathly debut, Tamsyn Muir continues the story of the penumbral Ninth House in Harrow the Ninth, a mind-twisting puzzle box of mystery, murder, magic, and mayhem。 Nothing is as it seems in the halls of the Emperor, and the fate of the galaxy rests on one woman's shoulders。

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, last necromancer of the Ninth House, has been drafted by her Emperor to fight an unwinnable war。 Side-by-side with a detested rival, Harrow must perfect her skills and become an angel of undeath — but her health is failing, her sword makes her nauseous, and even her mind is threatening to betray her。

Sealed in the gothic gloom of the Emperor's Mithraeum with three unfriendly teachers, hunted by the mad ghost of a murdered planet, Harrow must confront two unwelcome questions: is somebody trying to kill her? And if they succeeded, would the universe be better off?

Poor Harrow, somehow a book about her didn’t even end up being really about her。 A slow start but once the parameters of the puzzle started to resolve, it became pretty intriguing。 Audiobook a must, the narrator does such good voices for the all the different lichters。

The last third of this book is a solid 4 stars, but I felt like I had to slog through it to get there。 Didn't enjoy the writing style of "you did this" as opposed to "I did" or "they did", I do understand the reasoning behind it, but getting there took too long, and jumping around made me feel lost。I did enjoy following Harrow's story but it doesn't have the same feel as Gideon's - it's more 'space adventure' than the last ones 'fantasy mystery'。Probably won't bother with the next one。 The last third of this book is a solid 4 stars, but I felt like I had to slog through it to get there。 Didn't enjoy the writing style of "you did this" as opposed to "I did" or "they did", I do understand the reasoning behind it, but getting there took too long, and jumping around made me feel lost。I did enjoy following Harrow's story but it doesn't have the same feel as Gideon's - it's more 'space adventure' than the last ones 'fantasy mystery'。Probably won't bother with the next one。 。。。more

like。 okay。1) i read this in one sitting, because i can, so it's clearly, like, decent2) there are a lot of parts of this that are stronger than Gideon。 there are also a lot of parts that are weaker。 a lot of it is the same。3) can i just add now in hindsight, with all the strengths and weaknesses, it is so very patently obvious that the author is a hamsteak? how did i miss this?4) i will read the next parts。 i still think Gideon was stronger。 i think Muir needs to tie this together very neatly w like。 okay。1) i read this in one sitting, because i can, so it's clearly, like, decent2) there are a lot of parts of this that are stronger than Gideon。 there are also a lot of parts that are weaker。 a lot of it is the same。3) can i just add now in hindsight, with all the strengths and weaknesses, it is so very patently obvious that the author is a hamsteak? how did i miss this?4) i will read the next parts。 i still think Gideon was stronger。 i think Muir needs to tie this together very neatly with a very big bow to make this pay off。5) LESBIANS6) how foolish of me to expect Goodreads to use markdown 🙃 。。。more

I was confused for the first 75% of this book but it was SO WORTH IT。

Listened on audiobook and read along in a hard copy。 Phew, what an amazing book and sequel。 While I was challenged in the first half/two thirds to figure out just what in the heck was going on and why everything contradicted everything in Gideon the Ninth, I'm so glad I held on, as I flew though the last 4-5 hours of this book。 I am most definitely eagerly awaiting the 3rd installment! Not quite as breathtakingly bonkers as Gideon the Ninth。 And honestly, it was a little slow until the last 100 pages or so。 But I love the writing style, I love the characters, and I'm kicking myself for starting an unfinished series because it's going to be a while (fall 2022, sigh) before I can find out what happens next 。。。 Not quite as breathtakingly bonkers as Gideon the Ninth。 And honestly, it was a little slow until the last 100 pages or so。 But I love the writing style, I love the characters, and I'm kicking myself for starting an unfinished series because it's going to be a while (fall 2022, sigh) before I can find out what happens next 。。。 。。。more

It was great to get back to the weird world of the space Necromancers。 Yet, this book, by its design was very confusing and hard to follow。 I had to re-read sections to figure out what happened to still be confused。 The middle of the book was a bit of a slog and the rewrite of history very jarring。 The last twelve chapters really came together and the story finally moved at pace。 It did seem like Harrow becomes less important as the rest of the characters get ther plots resolved, but not our her It was great to get back to the weird world of the space Necromancers。 Yet, this book, by its design was very confusing and hard to follow。 I had to re-read sections to figure out what happened to still be confused。 The middle of the book was a bit of a slog and the rewrite of history very jarring。 The last twelve chapters really came together and the story finally moved at pace。 It did seem like Harrow becomes less important as the rest of the characters get ther plots resolved, but not our hero。 It's a middle book for certain。 。。。more

Okay so。。。you will spend most of this book not knowing what the hell is going on。 BUT, it is so, so worth it when it all finally (mostly) makes sense。

Is the pay off worth it when you start the book? Yes。 All I’ll say is that listening to the audiobook for this story has really unlocked what the author does in this story。 Yes you start in second person because you’re seeing harrow and her actions through Gideon。 That is apparent up front in the Audiobook。 Not a spoiler。 Secondly, I marked it off a star because while this book is ambitious and the story is Authentic with a capital A, the first half of the book is rough while we as the reader tr Is the pay off worth it when you start the book? Go ahead。 I cannot wait to read the next book。 This did something in terms of risks and story and payoff that I don’t even see men doing in fantasy/sci-fi…。 I’m just shoook。 。。。more

I'll admit that I couldn't get through this book the first time I picked it up。 I have little tolerance for mysteries, so when this book had the audacity to gaslight me, I got so frustrated that I quit and told everyone who would listen that it was a disappointment。Tamsyn Muir is an incredible writer。 She's a writer that you can tell LOVES writing。 Her prose is luscious and indulgent and somehow also manages to be funny。 She's an insufferable meme lord too, which never fails to pull me out of th I'll admit that I couldn't get through this book the first time I picked it up。 I have little tolerance for mysteries, so when this book had the audacity to gaslight me, I got so frustrated that I quit and told everyone who would listen that it was a disappointment。Tamsyn Muir is an incredible writer。 She's a writer that you can tell LOVES writing。 Her prose is luscious and indulgent and somehow also manages to be funny。 She's an insufferable meme lord too, which never fails to pull me out of the story but in a way that is oddly pleasant。 She has a habit of explaining how something is happening in vivid and bewildering imagery, and then, after 100 dependent clauses, finally telling you WHAT is happening。 It's easy to get lost in, and I had the pleasure of both reading and listening to the book (the audio book is excellent)。The thing is, when you're facing a mystery, all that delicious prose is tedious。 I found myself trying to skim ahead for answers, realizing that the answer was nowhere in sight, and then backtracking to where I started skimming。 You are kept in the dark for so fucking long。 Hence why I gave up on the book the first time, on chapter 30, 275 pages in。。。 right before the pieces start to come together。 The answer to the mystery is so fantastic and satisfying that all that wading about is worth it。 When I finally, finally realized what had happened, I could have given her a standing ovation, if I hadn't been listening in the car。 Everything in this series makes *sense*。 It follows the rules it sets out and just expands and expands so when the impossible happens, you never feel cheated — you just realize that you lacked the imagination to see that it was possible。 Which is nothing short of incredible, given how unique and absurd the world that she has created is。 LESBIAN。 NECROMANCERS。 IN。 SPACE。 I'm in awe。 。。。more

Somehow every bit as good as Gideon the Ninth if not better。 Muir throws you into a post-Canaan House world of confusion where the whole time you are wondering what is going on and trying to figure it out。 Not to mention you are thrust into the relationships of individuals who are thousands of years old。 The whole time you will wonder if your patience will pay off and I can tell you that it absolutely does and then some。 I was blown out of the water with the climax and conclusion。

I got stuck partway through waiting to figure out what the heck was going on。 But if I had just relaxed and accepted the strangeness I would have enojoyed it more since it turned out to be both more litteral and much more in line with the first book than I thought。

3。5This book was harder to read than Gideon the Ninth (which was already a challenge)。 It felt so long, and the story was damn confusing for almost 3/4 of the novel。 Like, literally。 And we don't get enough clues to figure out what was happening。 We can guess one or two things, maybe, but that's all。 And when we do start to get answers, it's still hella confusing。 Yet, all these complaints aside, I truly want to read the next books in the series, because there is something just unique about it。 3。5This book was harder to read than Gideon the Ninth (which was already a challenge)。 It felt so long, and the story was damn confusing for almost 3/4 of the novel。 Like, literally。 And we don't get enough clues to figure out what was happening。 We can guess one or two things, maybe, but that's all。 And when we do start to get answers, it's still hella confusing。 Yet, all these complaints aside, I truly want to read the next books in the series, because there is something just unique about it。 The characters, the tone, the dynamics have no equivalent in literature。 The concept is genius, the execution just has some flaws。On a side note, I liked the use of the second-person narration。 I wish, though, that it reflected more in the way the story is told, cause it feels like Harrow's voice more than anybody else's, one or two exceptions aside。 。。。more

Hmm I think it's not you, it's me。 I enjoyed the first book in this series, I enjoyed its irreverence, its wit, its ability to be unbeholden to Tolkein or Asimov and draw its own path with its own mythology and aesthetic。 And a lot of those strengths were also present in this second book。 But I spent far too long just baffled about exactly what the Hell was going on。 Other readers seem to love it so I think it must be me。 Maybe I needed to come back to it when I had a bit more capacity but in a Hmm I think it's not you, it's me。 I enjoyed the first book in this series, I enjoyed its irreverence, its wit, its ability to be unbeholden to Tolkein or Asimov and draw its own path with its own mythology and aesthetic。 And a lot of those strengths were also present in this second book。 But I spent far too long just baffled about exactly what the Hell was going on。 Other readers seem to love it so I think it must be me。 Maybe I needed to come back to it when I had a bit more capacity but in a year where I read Gravity's Rainbow, this is the book I found hardest to follow in 2021。 。。。more
